Welcome to the CTSD Green Team!

The CTSD Green Team is a district-wide group of educators, students, and staff dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility in our schools and community. Led by Round Valley School teacher Caroline Mann, the Green Team works across all four schools to support hands-on initiatives that encourage environmentally responsible habits and learning.

Through school-based Green Teams, students and staff participate in activities that reduce waste, promote healthy learning environments, and build awareness of sustainable practices. The Green Team’s work has continued to grow and has been recognized through certifications, publications, and opportunities to share our efforts at professional workshops.

Our mission is to inspire students and the greater community to care for the environment while making sustainability a meaningful part of everyday school life. We are grateful for the ongoing support of our families and community partners. TerraCycle Recycling Program

Our schools proudly participate in the TerraCycle Recycling Program, an initiative that promotes sustainability by collecting and recycling hard-to-recycle items. Below, you can click on each school’s logo to view the items currently being collected and the current collection data.

Latest Updates:

Green Teams at Round Valley School (RVS) and Clinton Township Middle School (CTMS) continue to lead sustainability efforts across the district.

At the CTMS Green Team meeting on April 22nd, students discussed placement of their donated tree and care procedures to ensure survival. They also selected juice pouches and sauce packets as their new collection items following the end of the Little Bites program.

At the RVS meeting on April 29th, students reflected on how their recycling efforts have helped the environment, prepared and shipped the final Little Bites TerraCycle submission, and chose sauce packets as their next collection initiative.

These collections continue to keep difficult-to-recycle materials out of landfills while teaching students the importance of environmental stewardship.

Thank you to all students, staff, and families for supporting our TerraCycle initiatives and helping create a greener school district.

Food Waste Reduction

Our Waste Warriors continue to work hard on reducing food waste in the cafeteria with Mrs. Ferri, and their efforts are getting noticed! Check out the article How Jersey Schools Are Tackling Food Waste to see our school's work highlighted.

Waste Audits

In addition to our tri-annual food waste audits, Waste Warriors at PMG and RVS have begun studying the amount of non-recyclable vs. recyclable waste our buildings produce. Students developed plans to use uniform recycling containers in each classroom and have now conducted two waste audits comparing garbage to recycled materials. Knowledge of the amount of waste is the first step toward finding ways to reduce it!

Green Challenge: Healthy Eating Pledge

The CTSD Green Team is excited to launch our Healthy Eating Pledge Challenge, inviting students, families, and community members to commit to healthier choices. Take the Healthy Eating Pledge here!

Across our schools, students are embracing the challenge in creative ways. At Round Valley School, students track their daily responses, while at Patrick McGaheran School, staff handed out sticker charts during lunch for students to record their healthy eating choices. CTMS news reporters even covered the challenge; watch their segment here!

During our district-wide Healthy Eating Challenge, students committed to eating a fruit or vegetable every day, and the results are in! Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we made healthy choices a daily habit.

Check out the results below: the bar graph shows how each school did, and the line chart highlights progress across the district. Great job to all students for making healthy choices and helping our schools grow stronger and greener!

Winter Sowing at RVS

🌱 Thank you for all of your support in our supply collection!

Every class at Round Valley School was able to build a mini-greenhouse using recycled jugs. Students learned about the importance of planting native plants and sowed native seeds into their recycled containers.

Thanks to your generous donations, over 300 greenhouses are now outside and ready for nature to do its magic, a wonderful hands-on lesson in sustainability and science!

Winter Sowing Update

Our winter sowing project has been a big success! The mini-greenhouses are doing well, and many of the seeds have already sprouted. It's been exciting for students to see their efforts come to life as the plants begin to grow.

Soon, students will be bringing their mini-greenhouses home to continue caring for their plants. Some of the winter-sown native species will be transplanted into our school garden, helping to support local ecosystems and pollinators.
